SpankOut Day USA April 30th was initiated for EPOCH-USA in 1998 to bring widespread attention to the need to end corporal punishment of children and to advocate non-violent discipline practices. These organizations and individuals are planning educational events in observance of 2006 SpankOut Day USA April 30th.

Arms of Love Family Fellowship

A table with information and pamphlets will be set up for families to learn more about non-punitive discipline through printed materials and question/answer opportunities. The program aims to reach young military families who are at high risk for abuse due to stress.

Caldwell Committee for Healthy Families

In an effort to reach teen parents, single parents, grandparents, and lower income parents, the Caldwell Committee for Healthy Families will be distributing information about alternatives to corporal punishment via a booth at Walmart, a local television channel, radio stations, and a banner in the downtown area.

Parents, caregivers, and home visitors will view the Alternatives to Spanking video and receive a copy of the Parent Handbook, Loving Discipline for Children Ages 1 through 5. After evaluating this year's program, Cen-Clear Child Services, Inc. may then introduce these resources at its 23 other Centers.

A MN high school student is sending a proclamation to the mayor of her city and a letter to the editor about ending corporal punishment of children.

Galveston County Community Action Council Head Start

At an evening parent workshop, teachers will work with children while parents view a puppet show on the theme of alternatives to spanking. Parents will then view a video and participate in a discussion on alternatives to corporal punishment. Peaceful Parent Achievement Awards and printed information will be given to the parents to take home.

Middle school students of Guernsey County will have the opportunity to participate in an essay contest. Contestants will we asked to write a one hundred-word essay explaining why spanking is not a good form of discipline and providing alternative forms of discipline.

An interactive workshop stressing positive behavior support and non-physical discipline techniques will be held and parents and grandparents who attend will receive information on the health services and other resources available to them. Educational and fun participatory activities will also take place.

An information booth for children and families visiting the Outpatient Center will be set up in the main lobby. Children will engage in esteem-building hands-on craft activities. Parents will be offered materials related to positive parenting, including a magnet containing the Ten Guidelines for Raising a Well-Behaved Child. 300-400 children and their families/caregivers are expected to take part.

Prevent Child Abuse Rhode Island strives to keep every child in Rhode Island safe from abuse and neglect through primary prevention. In the month of April, 1,000 brochures containing effective discipline methods and information about Prevent Child Abuse Rhode Island will be distributed to English- and Spanish-speaking parents raising children of all ages.

Sponsored two mini-grants for SpankOut Day projects that focused on children's feelings about corporal punishment through writing and art. PsycHealth also had an article in their newsletter.

On SpankOut Day, there will be a booth at WalMart displaying the winning posters and providing parents with responsible parenting resources.

The CASA/GAL Program plans to place a public service announcement in the Springfield News-Sun each week during the month of April in an effort to educate residents of Springfield and Clark Counties on the topics of child abuse and neglect such as "Never hit or shake a baby". The announcements will also contain a list of local agencies and telephone numbers for residents to contact for more information.

Planning a community event with presentations on positive discipline, a balloon launch for children and a prayer for the safety of children by a local clergyman.

The session will focus on the negative effects of physical punishment, the differences between discipline and punishment, alternatives to physical punishment, and ways to improve children's behavior.

In conjunction with the RIF Shared Beginnings Book Distribution, parents and children will participate in a program that will focus on discipline and the child under age 5. The stages of development will be presented, along with handouts and discussions about physical punishment and alternative forms of discipline. A Ready to Learn coordinator from WBGU-PBS TV will present a program entitled "Challenging Behaviors: Where Do We Begin?" The workshop will introduce the many issues of challenging behavior, including causes and effects. Parents and educators in attendance will learn non-physical strategies to support young children who exhibit challenging behavior.

Richland County Children Services

A training session will demonstrate to grandparents and other care-give relatives that discipline is much more than punishment. Alternatives to corporal punishment will be presented along with stress awareness and reduction techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the material presented through small group discussions.

Group sessions on the dangers of physical discipline will promote positive alternatives. Four sessions will be offered to mothers and fathers ages 16-21, with an emphasis on education, discussion of appropriate discipline, and support.

Parents will attend three 90-minute sessions conducted in an interactive format including a parent workbook with homework readings and activities as well as in-session videos and discussions led by a group facilitator. The materials emphasize non-violent discipline and outline the stages of child development.

Women's Re-Entry Network (WREN)

Wyandot Co. Help Me Grow
