SpankOut Day USA April 30th was initiated for EPOCH-USA in 1998 to bring widespread attention to the need to end physical punishment of children and to promote effective, non-violent disciplinary practices. More than 500 events and programs have been held since that time. Agencies in several foreign countries have adopted the observance to educate parents and caregivers.

ATTACHMENT PARENTING INTERNATIONAL OF UPPER MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Program: Showing of documentary, "What Babies Want - An exploration of the Consciousness of Infants" at the area movie theatre. This documentary cites acclaimed child behavioral experts on how early bonds between parents or caregivers and their children affect the rapidly developing infant brain. The author of the documentary may be willing to speak at the showing. Center for Effective Discipline informational publications on positive discipline will also be distributed.

COLORADO STATE FOSTER PARENT ASSOCIATION

PHILADELPHIA COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE

Target: Parents of Byers' Charter School (enrollment of 400 students across the city of Philadelphia, PA).
Program: A two hour program "Healthy Parents, Happy Children" including a facilitative discussion addressing the needs of children and families; demands and stressors placed on parents; their reactions to such demands/stressors and the negative effects (i.e. physical discipline, poor communication, stress on children). The discussion of alternatives to physical punishment, using the problem-solving, relational approach, will also be incorporated.
PREVENT CHILD ABUSE NORTH DAKOTA

Program: Lesson and discussion about alternatives to corporal punishment with parents in the Nurturing Parenting Program and the Circle of Parents network group. Each participant will be presented with and asked to sign The Family Pledge of Nonviolence. Additionally, magnets with "Discipline Shouldn't Leave Lasting Scars" will be distributed to parents in the aforementioned groups and will also be included in Child Abuse/Neglect Prevention Month packets sent to community and partnering agencies. APPALACHIAN PEACE AND JUSTICE NETWORK

Target: Parents and students at Amesville Elementary school in rural Athens County, OH.
Program: A special curriculum prepared by the Appalachian Peace and Justice Network will be used in the school that day with an emphasis on the reasons why physical and verbal violence should not be used. All students will receive a bookmark with a list of non-violent adult interventions to take home to parents. A banner over the school door will announce the day and "giants" will be placed on each side of the door so that people can see how it feels when bigger people loom over them. A conflict management coordinator will greet parents with material on positive discipline/no spanking, and she will also be available to answer specific questions on discipline.

Program: A program being conducted over four one-hour sessions will feature a Children's component, with educational and interactive presentations on how it feels to hit, why we should not hit and what can be done instead. Children will create puppets and put on a puppet show for adults, who will participate in a separate adult component of the program. This adult program will consist of three two-hour sessions on the effects of corporal punishment and alternatives.

Program: A three-hour training "Partnerships with Parents: A Winning Combination" will be held to educate child care professionals. Joe French, a fellow of the Supporting Teachers, Strengthening Families National Leadership Program will discuss protective factors known to reduce child abuse and neglect. The discussion will include the physical, social-emotional, and cognitive effects of corporal punishment and alternatives. The speaker will address the state rules and regulations that govern child care settings re: this issue. Participants will create action plans for building relationships with parents.
HENRY COUNTY CHILD ADVOCACY COLLABORATIVE AND THE FAMILY AND CHILDREN FIRST COUNCIL

PARENT SUPPORT, a program of the Mental Health Association of Licking County
Target: Parents in parent support programs, parents of a child with a mental illness, grandparents who are raising children, teens and their children. The workshop will also be open to the general public including rural under-served areas.
Program: An interactive workshop titled "Anger Management for Parents and Kids". Parents will learn about alternatives to spanking, research on negative effects of corporal punishment, how to manage anger so they don't strike children in anger and respectful problem solving strategies.

Program: Last year the agency held a "Parent Café" - a class on positive discipline with a complimentary breakfast. As part of a Kid's Day program this year, agencies and groups will be invited to set up in an expo-like setting offering parenting techniques and other resources. Materials on positive discipline, no spanking, will be provided by agencies in booths to show parents that children do not need to be physically punished to correct behavior. A SpankOut booth will have a person designated to answer questions on discipline from parents.

Kenya, Africa "NO KIBOKO DAY"
ANPPCAN Kenya Chapter observes "No Hitting Day".
Celebrations for International No Hitting Day in Kenya
ANPPCAN Kenya Chapter has spearheaded the celebrations for international No-Hitting Day since 2004 and dubbed it the 'NO KIBOKO DAY' for the purpose of creating awareness of the effects of corporal punishment, supporting the government initiative to ban use of corporal punishment in schools and advocating for the use of positive discipline methods in homes and all children institutions.
In working towards this goal, and in collaboration with other organizations ANPPCAN Kenya organizes a march (procession) on the 30th of April every year to raise awareness on the effects of corporal punishment of children in homes and schools and to praise teachers and parents who use non-violent forms of discipline.
After the march, 'peaceful parent' and 'peaceful teacher' awards are given to parents and teachers nominated by children. There are also performances such as drama, poems, songs by youth theatre groups and children on the main theme. Thematic Information, education and communication materials on alternatives to physical punishment are distributed to the public during the event. These include booklets, brochures, fliers, calendars, T-shirts and stickers.

The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Windsor and Essex County is in its fifth year of participation in SpankOut Day. The organization plans a gathering at the Rotary Safety Village in Windsor on April 29th. There will be speakers, parent resources, events for children and presentation of the "Kent Billinghurst Award" to a child artist whose drawing of a special inspiring adult is chosen. More than 400 people attended their "No Spank Day" event last year.

Santosh Kulkarni is working with a group planning to put up banners on positive discipline/no hitting in local language at schools and will provide information on this topic to the media.

Norm Lee is setting up a table at Wal-mart on "Democratic Discipline", the "New Non-Punitive Parenting Paradigm", stickers, badges and other material on positive discipline/no spanking.
No Hitting Day Celebration in Cameroon
Global Welfare Association (GLOWA) shall be celebrationg "No Spanking Day" on April 30th. This event has been planned to coincide with the event in the United Sates of America. This will give GLOWA the oppotunity to involve children in raising awareness to the power of talking rather than spanking.
According to official instructions corporal Punishment is forbiden in Cameroonian schools, but teachers and others adents of traditional methods of parenting says it is the only languages children understand and have continued to practice it.
A colloquium shall be orgaised bringing parents, children, policy makers and human rights defenders together to discuss why this order suspending beating in Cameroonian schools is not being respected.

Donna Raycroft of Riverbend Parent-Child Centers had a letter published in the Concord Monitor on 4-18 calling for an end to corporal punishment of children and providing information about programs on non-violent discipline that the Centers provide for the community.
Taiwan
The Humanistic Education Foundation is planning an activity for SpankOut Day April 30th and will display documents and photos of SpankOut Day events in other countries.
Ohio, USA
The Neighborhood Child Care office in Cleveland sent 500 parents information about SpankOut Day. The information will be distributed by home care providers to parents. Penny Wagner Bauer organized this informational effort. The agency oversees 3700 children in daycare homes.
