Old Dominion SpankOut Activities, 2004

Dr. Lombardo,
For National Spank Out Day I printed off the reasons not to spank list and passed them out to my students to take home to their parents. As a substitute teacher I had a group of 5th grade students today and decided that their parents would benefit from the list since many students said they had younger siblings in the home.

Hello, it's Kristen Kelly from the Virginia Beach site. I wanted to write you and tell you about the project that I am doing for class. I emailed 4 local radio stations (101.3 2WD(middle aged adults), 94.9 the Point(young and older listeners), 92.9 Oldies(older listeners) and Z104 (young listeners) and I informed them about National Spank Out Day 2004 on April 30th. I hope that at least one of the radio stations will tell their listeners about this and a difference can be made. I will let you know if I hear back from any of the stations. This is the letter that I sent out:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Hello my name is Kristen Kelly and I am a Sociology major at Old Dominion University. I was wondering if I could take a few minutes of your time. For a class my teacher, Karen Polonko, has asked us to take a stand against child abuse and the only way that I know how to reach a large audience is by radio.
In order to give widespread visibility to the need to stop hitting children, SpankOut Day USA has been set for April 30th. It is an opportunity for everyone to think about ways to raise children which will help them become caring, responsible, and productive adults. Discipline is important. Children need to have rules which are clear, concise, and consistent. They must have predictable and fair consequences for disobeying rules. Consequences for misbehaving should make a connection to the misbehavior and fit the child's age and maturity level. Children, like adults, learn better by being rewarded for good behavior than by being punished. Our community has many resources for teaching parents effective discipline of children, including schools, mental health centers, YWCAs and churches.
Most of all, children need to observe adults who are good models of self-discipline, caring and responsibility. Discipline is teaching children, not hitting them.
So this is why I ask you to help me tell everyone in Hampton Roads about Spank Out Day on April 30th. At the bottom of this email is a public service announcement. If you could please pass this along, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Kristen Kelly
Please air through April 30th

Hi Dr. Lombardo, I just wanted to let you know, that in honor of spank out day, I am printing out multiple copies of the 10 reasons not to hit a child and handing them out in my office and to as many people as I can outside of work. I am also holding a meeting in office to discuss the importance of Spank Out Day and what parents should do to participate. Many people have signed up and I am really looking forward to it. Thank you so much

Hi Dr. Lombardo,
I plan on participating in the spankout extra credit opportunity but didn't know exactly how to submit it to you. I have downloaded the "effective discipline tips" pamphlet and have posted it in my precinct; and (barring no exception from my Major) I plan on distributing to each officer. My fellow officers and I encounter cases of domestic violence every day. My hope is that this information will sink in and eventually find it's way to into the homes of abusers and victims.
Thanks

I decided to dress up the flyer and place them in different stores and churches for people to pick up as they leave.

Dr. Lombardo,
I did as you suggested and had friends help me hand out flyers to several local day care centers. We also handed out the flyers to members of our church. In total we handed out nearly 500 flyers in our area.

Dr. Lombardo,
For National Spank Out Day on next Friday, I have posted flyers in both my parents offices. My mother is an administrator and the head of the International Baccalaurette Diploma Program at Princess Anne High School, and my father is a nuclear engineer with the U.S. Government.
I have also posted signs in a few day care facilities in Virginia Beach, as well as at my work. (Colonial Cadillac)
In addition to all of this I have also passed on some flyers to classmates at ODU, and have in turn given flyers to be announced on 94.9 the point radio.

I was able to get 26 people to agree that day not to spank their child and in return do 30 minutes of either play time or read to them.'
