ACTIVITIES 2008 - 2009
Program:
Planned and carried out activities for SpankOut Day USA April 30th initiated for EPOCH-USA in 1998 including carrying out a competitive mini-grants application program, bestowing and monitoring 20 grants, providing material and technical support to grantees and conducting a media campaign on SpankOut Day
Monitored and supported development of a web page at Phoenix Children’s Hospital for the EPOCH-USA report on physical punishment of children – Report on Physical Punishment of Children in the U.S.: What Research Tells Us About Its Effects on Children and assisted the hospital in a media outreach
Supported Phoenix Children’s Hospital in an endorsement process for a report on research on corporal punishment of children in the U.S. for EPOCH-USA- more than 50 endorsements were obtained in the first three months including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics
Researched and developed fact sheets and support material on corporal punishment of children for advocacy organizations and policy makers
Surveyed Ohio public school superintendents in districts reporting corporal punishment to EMIS to confirm numbers submitted and reported on it to public policy makers and the media
Coordinated support and provided testimony for development of an Ohio State Board of Education position calling for a ban on school corporal punishment – successfully adopted in November 2008
Coordinated a coalition of organizations seeking a ban on corporal punishment in Ohio public schools- successfully achieved in July 2009
Updated sections of www.stophitting.org including corporal punishment school laws, child care laws, foster care laws, institutions for children laws
Provided responses to parenting questions on discipline through the Q and A of www.stophitting.org
Edited and distributed the EPOCH-USA newsletter to almost 5,000 individuals and organizations
Provided regular email updates and alerts on national and state corporal punishment issues and news to Center for Effective Discipline contacts in all states and to the media
Developed and initiated a video contest on “Speak, not Spank” on www.stophitting.org
Served as a state, national and international resource to the media upon request including policy makers, researchers, students and the general public
Coordinated numerous website updates with the www.stophitting.org webmaster
Developed and posted new sections on the website including “What You can Do” and “What kids can do about paddling” and posted two You Tube videos – a Spanish version of “How Children Feel About Spanking” and a CASA SpankOut Day presentation on “Why spanking is bad and what parents can do instead” by middle school students
Sponsored an amicus curiae for the State of Michigan Supreme Court for a case involving corporal punishment as a criterion for awarding custody
Completely redesigned www.stophitting.org with the assistance of our webmaster
Operational Activities
Continued development of an operations manual
Investigated opportunities for a long-term partnership for the Center for Effective Discipline and signed a Memorandum of Agreement to pursue such a partnership with the National Child Protection Training Center
Made annual reports including a federal 990 form, reports to the State Attorney General, City charitable licensing reports, and the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Program
Coordinated the Board Annual Meeting and bi-monthly meetings of the Board of Trustees
Maintained activity reports, financial records and various e-lists
Fundraising
Sought operational funding and funding for SpankOut Day grants through fundraising letters and letters of inquiry
Submitted a final report for a printing grant for the research report on physical punishment of children the Dave Thomas Foundation
NOTE: The Center for Effective Discipline has no paid staff. It is a volunteer-run organization including the position of Executive Director.
