CENTER FOR EFFECTIVE DISCIPLINE ACTIVITIES

7-01-06 TO 6-30-07

Program:

Conducted a study of corporal punishment laws and updated the Center for Effective Discipline website www.stophitting.org (LAWS).

Conducted a study of national organizations re: position statements calling for a ban on corporal punishment of children in schools and corporal punishment of children in all settings and provided a report to researchers and the website.

Conducted a survey of OH school districts regarding the use of school corporal punishment and provided results to the media, policy makers, and the general public.

Continued coordination and development of the U.S. joint statement on physical punishment of children and youth for EPOCH-USA and distributed a first draft to 20 national reviewers.

Developed a contact list of national organizations and state affiliates for future contacts regarding the endorsement of the joint statement on physical punishment of children and youth.

Researched studies on school corporal punishment and developed fact sheets on its use.

Updated corporal punishment policies on the 100 largest US school districts and posted them on www.stophitting.org.

Wrote a history of the OH corporal punishment law and disseminated it to various constituencies and public policy makers.

Conducted a grants program for SpankOut Day April 30th and awarded 41 mini-grants to agencies, churches, and schools for positive discipline information programs for parents and caretakers.

Conducted a media campaign on SpankOut Day.

Developed and disseminated 1,000 booklets on positive discipline to mini-grant awardees.

Developed and disseminated a DVD entitled "Considering Spanking" to all mini-grant recipient organizations for staff training.

Conducted an art contest for children "How it feels to be spanked".

Edited and published an EPOCH-USA newsletter for 5,000 recipients.

Responded to parent requests for discipline guidance coming from the Parent Q and A on www.stophitting.org.

Served as a state, national and international resource for media, public policy makers, researchers and the general public on corporal punishment effects and alternatives.

Provided an invited presentation for the Third International Women's Peace Conference in Dallas, TX. Attended the Children's Rights Conference as a USA representative.

Served with an Ohio cohort for the development of a CDC grant for training northwest OH rural/small town citizens in legislative advocacy on ending school corporal punishment and participated in training activities.

Fundraising

Applied for and received grants from the Ohio Children's Trust Fund, Ohio Children's Foundation and Google.

Sent fundraising letters to past contributors in November 2006.

Management

Updated the website www.stophitting.org on a regular basis.

Updated e-contacts and the newspaper mailing list.

Maintained records of the organization and filed federal, state, and city reports.
